Understanding Eating Disorders

Eating disorders claim more lives than any other mental illness – one in five of the most seriously affected will die prematurely from the physical consequences or suicide.

Over 725,000 men and women in the UK are affected by eating disorders.

Eating Disorders are not really about food and size, nor are they a “slimmer’s” disease. There is often an assumption that it is a disease that only affect young girls or women.

Despite this assumption, research suggests that 25% of sufferers are males and that there is an increasing number being affected by these illnesses.

Eating disorders can develop at any age but adolescents under 20 make up almost half (49%) of all receiving eating disorder inpatient treatment in England.
